荘厳でクラシカルな優しい曲調を特徴とするオール・アバウト・イヴは、叙情的なゴス・バンドの代表格である。プログレの文脈で語られることも多い彼らではあるが、ゴス・バンドとの関わりの深さから、ここでは私はオール・アバウト・イヴをあえてゴスの文脈の中で取り上げようと思う。
オール･アバウト・イヴはボーカルのジュリアンヌ・リーガンを中心にイギリスで結成。インディーズ・レーベルから２枚のシングルをリリースした後、ミッションのウェイン・ハッセイと知り合ったことでウェイン・ハッセイのプロデュースの下シングルをリリース、ミッションのツアー・サポートを務める等し、オール・アバウト・イヴは一躍メジャー・バンドの仲間入りを果たした。
しかし、セカンド・アルバム『スカーレット・アンド・アザー・ストーリーズ』の発表後、オリジナル・メンバーであったギターのティム・ブリチーノが脱退し、第三期シスターズ・オブ・マーシーへと加入。バンドは存続の危機を噂されるものの、４枚目の『ウルトラ・ヴァイオレット』まで継続し、1993年に解散する。ところがその後、1999年のミッションの再結成ツアーでのサポートを機に不死鳥のごとく復活し、現在ではアコースティック主体の音楽性で活動が再開されている。
オール･アバウト・イヴの魅力は何と言っても、歌姫ジュリアンヌの美しい歌声、そして華麗な旋律にある。昨今では「癒し系」なる音楽がやたらと取り沙汰されているが、私に言わせればオール・アバウト・イヴこそが真の癒し系である。それ故に現在のアコースティック主体の活動も違和感はなく、むしろ彼らの長所を引き出すスタイルと言えるのではあるが、やはり私としてはバンド・サウンドとしてのオール・アバウト・イヴを再び聞きたいというのが本音ではある。
