シスターズ・オブ・マーシーを脱退した、ウェイン・ハッセイとグレッグ・アダムスが結成したバンド。当然のことながら、このミッションもゴシック色の強いバンドでありシスターズと双璧を成すゴシック・ロックの代表的存在である。
初期の頃は、ハッセイの12弦ギターを中心としたアコースティックでクラシカルなゴス・ロックを聴かせていたが、徐々に音楽性はロック色が強まり、６作目の『マスク』ではダンス・ミュージックのようなアレンジが多様される。しかし、その後再びロック的な方向性へと戻り、クラシカルな初期の特徴をやや残しながらも、ヘビーなサウンドへと変化していった。
私がミッションを知ったのは、やはり、元シスターズのウェイン・ハッセイがボーカルを務めているというシスターズの流れからであった。シスターズと比較すると暗い音楽性はあるものの、感覚的に「開けている」という印象が強い。シスターズがインにインに入り込んでいくという印象であるのに対して、ミッションはより明るい印象がある。
また、シスターズが作品をあまり発表しないのに比べ、ミッションは多作なのも、私のように狭いジャンルの音楽しか聴かない人間にとっては助かることである。しかし、2007年に新アルバム『ゴッド・イズ・ア・バレット』をリリースし、ツアーを重ねた後、ウェイン・ハッセイ自らミッションを解散させることを宣言。長年に渡り活動を行ってきた80年代ゴシック・バンドのその歴史に幕が降ろされた。
