ロゼッタ･ストーン
Rosetta Stoneは、The Missionによって見出されたゴスの新星バンドである。私がこのバンドの存在を知ったのも、そのジャケットのゴシック性もありはしたものの、やはり、The Missionのウェイン・ハッセイがプロデュースした、という肩書によるところが大きい。そしてそのデビュー・アルバム『An Eye For The Main Chance』は、その期待を大きく上回る完成度の高さで、私を喜ばせた。まさに終焉に向かっていたゴシック・ロックに新たなるバンドが誕生したのである。
Rosetta StoneはThe Mission等の80年代ゴスの血を正統に引き継ぎながらも、より現代的なロックへと昇華させている点において、完全にオリジナリティがあり、間違いなく90年代のゴシックを牽引した中心バンドの一つであったと言える。
しかしRosetta Stoneはアルバムを重ねるにつれ、音楽性が徐々に変化してゆき、現在の音楽性は暗いゴスの香りは漂わせているものの、打ち込みを多様したデジタル・ミュージックへと大きく変化してしまっている。この変化は個人的には少々がっかりしたというのが正直なところである。あくまでニューウェーブの一つの潮流であったゴシックというジャンルにロック的な広がりを加えたという点にこそ私は評価をしていたので、デジタル・ミュージックへの移行は非常に残念でならない。
とはいえ、ファースト・アルバムの完成度は非常に高い。私が友人達を洗脳する際によくかけるアルバムである。
