ナイトウィッシュ
長年同一のジャンル音楽を聴いていると、新しい音との出会いは稀となってしまう。特に私のようにマイナー・ジャンルに限定した掘り下げ方をしていると、新しい音による衝撃を受けることは少なくなり、知らぬバンドの音を聞いてもやれ何に似ているだのといった穿った聞き方となりがちである。
そんな私がThe Sisters of MercyやAuto-Modにも匹敵せんばかりの衝撃を受けたのがこのNightwishである。女性ヴォーカルをフューチャーし、キーボードを主体としたドラマティックな曲調と旋律を奏でるシンフォニック・メタルであるNightwishはその構成だけを見ればさしたる特徴はない。にも関わらず私が凄まじい衝撃を受けた理由は、ひとえにヴォーカルのターヤのスタイルにある。声楽を学んでいたというターヤのオペラ式に発声されるハイトーン・ヴォーカルは、今までのロックのヴォーカリスト全ての在り方とは完全に格が異なり、あまりに高い芸術的次元へと突き抜けてしまっている。
その芸術的なヴォーカルはライヴにおいてもスタジオ同様、遜色無く発揮され、その声量、ややビブラート気味のハイトーンは圧倒的な存在感を放っている。感動を呼び起こすそのヴォーカルは、私が今まで聞いてきたものが所詮ロックという枠の中のものでしかなかったのか、という疑念すら抱かせる。
シンフォニック・メタル・バンドとしても楽曲はアルバムを重ねる毎に確実にその完成度を高めていき、『Once』では、ある意味Nightwishというバンドの完成型を示している。『Once』ツアーでは来日も果たし、頂点を極めたかに見えたNightwishであったが、何とメンバーからターヤへの衝撃的な公開解雇通告を経てヴォーカルは2007年にアネットへとチェンジした。
個人的にはターヤの衝撃が凄かっただけに、アネットへとヴォーカルが変わってからのNightwishはやや平凡になってしまったという印象は拭えなかった。しかし、その後音楽性の違いからアネットが脱退。3代目ヴォーカリストとして元After Foreverのフロールがサポートを経て正式加入となった。ターヤの幻影をいかにして払いのけていくか、それがNightwishの大きな課題となっていくであろう。
