スケルタル･ファミリー
David Bowieの曲からその名前が取られたSkeletal Familyは、前身バンドであるThe Elementsを経て1982年にイギリスで結成される。後にGhost Danceで成功を収めることになるアン・マリーをヴォーカルに据えた、やや荒削りでポジティブ・パンク的なそのサウンドは、ポストSiouxsie and the Bansheesと噂されていた。
彼らはファースト・アルバムである『Burning Oil』をリリースした後に、The Sisters of Mercyの1984年のツアーのサポートを務め、インディペンデント・チャートでの評価を高める。しかし、セカンド・アルバム『Futile Combat』をリリースした後に、ヴォーカルのアン・マリーが脱退。ヴォーカルをカトリーナに変えバンドの活動は継続され、メジャー・レーベルであるクリスタルとの契約が結ばれるものの、わずか2枚のシングルをリリースしてバンドは解散を迎えてしまう。
Skeletal Familyはやはり荒削りで薄っぺらいサウンドであることは否めないし、曲の構成も単調なものが多く、アン・マリーのヴォーカルはGhost Dance期に比べてただただヒステリックな印象が強い。しかしそれでも彼らの活動の転機となった「She Cries Alone」や「Promised Land」は間違いなく名曲であるし、忘れ去られがちであるカトリーヌ在籍時の楽曲は彼ら独自の色が薄れているとは言え、非常にクオリティが高い。廉価なCD再発盤もあり入手は比較的容易であるため、初期ポジティブ・パンクの代表的存在の一つとして、Skeletal Familyを未聴の方は是非とも聞いてみて欲しいと思う。
なお、Skeletal Familyは2002年にクラリーという女性をヴォーカルに迎え再結成され、アルバムを2枚リリース。そして、2009年、何とアン・マリーを再びヴォーカルに戻し、現在もなお精力的に活動を続けている。
