オール･アバウト･イヴ
荘厳でクラシカルな優しい曲調を特徴とするAll about Eveは、叙情的なゴス・バンドの代表格である。プログレの文脈で語られることも多い彼らではあるが、ゴス・バンドとの関わりの深さから、ここでは私はAll about Eveをあえてゴスの文脈の中で取り上げようと思う。
All about Eveはボーカルのジュリアンヌ・リーガンを中心にイギリスで結成。インディーズ・レーベルから2枚のシングルをリリースした後、The Missionのウェイン・ハッセイと知り合ったことでウェイン・ハッセイのプロデュースの下シングルをリリース、The Missionのツアー・サポートを務める等し、All about Eveは一躍メジャー・バンドの仲間入りを果たした。
しかし、セカンド・アルバム『Scarlet And Other Stories』の発表後、オリジナル・メンバーであったギターのティム・ブリチーノが脱退し、第三期The Sisters of Mercyへと加入。バンドは存続の危機を噂されるものの、4枚目の『Ultraviolet』まで継続し、1993年に解散する。ところがその後、1999年のThe Missionの再結成ツアーでのサポートを機に不死鳥のごとく復活し、現在ではアコースティック主体の音楽性で活動が再開されている。
All about Eveの魅力は何と言っても、歌姫ジュリアンヌの美しい歌声、そして華麗な旋律にある。昨今では「癒し系」なる音楽がやたらと取り沙汰されているが、私に言わせればAll about Eveこそが真の癒し系である。それ故に現在のアコースティック主体の活動も違和感はなく、むしろ彼らの長所を引き出すスタイルと言えるのではあるが、やはり私としてはバンド・サウンドとしてのAll about Eveを再び聞きたいというのが本音ではある。
なお最後に蛇足ではあるが、The Missionの『Gods Own Medicine』、『Children』等のバック・コーラスでもジュリアンヌの美しい歌声を聴くことができる。
