バウハウス
このバンドについては、もはや何も語る必要もないのではなかろうか。The Sisters of Mercyがゴスの帝王であるならば、Bauhausはゴスの元祖である。パンクからニューウェーブへと移行するムーブメントの中でBauhausが生み出した、暗い音楽的嗜好やシアトリカルなステージングは後のオルタナティヴ・ロックや日本の「ビジュアル系」と呼ばれるバンド達に多大な影響を与えている。ゴシックが好きであるにも関わらず、Bauhausを知らない者がいるとすれば、それはもぐり以外の何者でもないとすら言えよう。
近代デザインの先駆的理念を築きあげたドイツの造形大学の名前を冠したBauhausは、1978年にイギリスで結成。ヴォーカルのピーター・マーフィーの舞踏的なステージング、ダニエル・アッシュの型破りでノイジーなギター、デヴィット・Ｊとケビン・ハスキンス兄弟の重く沈み込むようなリズム隊。演奏技術的には決して優れているとは言えないものの、この4人が生み出す独特の緊張感溢れる雰囲気は、初期ニューウェーブの代表格として今もなお圧倒的なカリスマ性を誇っている。
彼らはスタジオ・アルバムとしては4枚のアルバムをリリースした後、1983年に解散。ピーター・マーフィーはダリズ・カーを経てソロ活動へ、残る３人は各自のソロ活動を経てTones on Tail、そしてLove and Rocketsとしてそれぞれの道を歩んでいった。・・・が、1998年に1年間限定で奇跡の再結成をし、何と日本公演を含むワールドツアーを行った。このサイトを訪れている方の中でも、この日本公演に足を運んだ人は多いことであろう。
ゴシックと呼ばれることを嫌う彼らであるが、私としてはやはりBauhausはゴシックであると断言したい。ゴシック・ロックを嗜好する者であるならば、ベスト・アルバムやコンピレーションではなく、少なくともファースト・アルバムの『イン・ザ・フラット・フィールド』だけでもアルバム全体を通して触れておくべきである。モノクロームのジャケット、楽曲の端々から感じ取られる新たなるムーブメントの息吹、間違いなく80年代を代表する名盤の一つである。必聴。
