ザ･ダンス･ソサエティー
Sex Gang Children、Southern Death Cultと並んでポジパン御三家として括られたThe Danse Society。The Danse Societyはポジティブ・パンクという言葉による負の影響を最も被ったバンドと言えるだろう。
The Danse Societyはヴォーカルのスティーヴ・ロウリングスを中心として、前身バンドのDanse Crazyを経て1981年に結成。Joy Divisionにも通ずるような暗い音楽的嗜好は確かに持っていたものの、ポジティブ・パンクとして括られたバンド達とは、明らかに一線を画するダンサンブルでクラブ向きなサウンドをその特徴としていた。浮遊感のあるシンセサイザーを主体とした叙情的で冷たい感触を与えるバックに、ロウリングスの気だるいヴォーカルが絡んで織り成す退廃的な空間は独特のものがあった。
しかし、1983年に音楽雑誌側から作り出された「ポジティブ・パンク」という架空のムーヴメントの主役の一人として 祭り上げられる形で、The Danse Societyは83年にメジャー・レーベルであるアリスタと契約。『Heaven Is Waiting』までは彼らの持ち味を残していたものの、徐々に方向性を見失い大衆的な要素を取り込んでいき「これがダンソサなのかっ！？」という変貌を遂げ86年に解散を迎えてしまう。
当時の日本では、ロウリングスの美少年ぶりばかりが話題として先行していた感もあり、私は実はそんなミーハーな紹介記事を眺める度に眉を顰めていた。しかし、今になって思えばポジパン・ブームさえなければ、彼らはUltravoxやNew Order的な方向のバンドとして成功することができたのではないかと惜しまれてならない。彼らの音源は今ではCDとして再発されていることもあり、未聴の方は是非とも彼らの初期の優れた音源の数々に触れてみて欲しい。
